View the public artwork ORB by Spanish urban artist SpY, a majestic illuminated art installation. It takes place on the Esplanade de la Place des Arts. This major project was undertaken by the MURAL organization.
The sculpture's complex surface, consisting of ninety convex discs made of polished steel, reflects the surrounding space, creating a sophisticated kaleidoscopic effect. With his dynamic and minimalist style, SpY invites you to reconsider your perception of space, movement and light. The artwork’s appearance gradually changes throughout the day and night, exhibiting very different qualities depending on the changing light and capturing beautiful sunrises and sunsets in a special way.
This major project is led by MURAL and made possible by the financial support of the Quebec government through the Fonds signature métropole, and of Tourisme Montréal through the Fonds pour les initiatives ponctuelles, in partnership with Place des Arts.
About SpY
SpY, whose identity has remained secret to this day, is a Spanish urban artist born in the 1970s in Madrid and considered one of the pioneers of Spanish street art. He began his artistic career in the 1980s as a graffiti artist, leaving his mark on the street scene with his distinctive, provocative style. As the years went by, SpY expanded his sphere of activity from traditional graffiti to more conceptual urban interventions.
SpY’s work is characterized by a fun-filled and intelligent approach to the urban environment, transforming everyday objects and spaces into intriguing and often humorous works of art. As discreet as his interventions often are, they nonetheless invite passersby to reflect on social issues like consumption, surveillance and communication. SpY uses a variety of mediums – installations, sculptures, illuminated panels and posters – to transform public space into a setting for interaction and asking questions. The artist is recognized for his ability to surprise and engage the public by playing with the urban environment and cultural codes, all the while maintaining an approach that respects the public space.
